Things to know about Castel dell'Ovo

The Castel Dell’Ovo is the oldest castle of Naples and is one of the most representative places in the whole gulf. Its imposing structure stands on the small island of Megaride, connected to the mainland by a small bridge.

The island was originally inhabited by the Greek colonies around the 6th century BC. Later on, the Romans built a villa, where the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire was exiled in the 5th century AD. The Normans built the present castle during the 15th century.

Today, the Castel dell’Ovo can be visited for free. Its large rooms are often used for exhibitions and conferences, while the picturesque towers offer breathtaking views of the Gulf. At the base of the Castle is located the district of the "Borgo Marinari", known for its typical restaurants and for the presence of the most important sailing clubs of Naples.
