The city of Modena, a few kilometers from Bologna, is a beautiful city full of monuments and important cultural and historical sites.
Capital of the duchy of Este from 1598 to 1859, Modena has been since ancient times and important city for its university and the archbishop. Also, since 1947 the city is home to the Army and the Military Academy of the Carabinieri.
Among its main monuments, make sure not to mess the Cathedral, the Torre Civica and Piazza Grande Ghirlandina, included since 1997 on the list of Italy's heritage sites by UNESCO.
