Things to know about Torcello Island

The island of Torcello is one of the oldest settlements in the Lagoon of Venice. Inhabited since the early years of the Roman Empire, Torcello enjoyed its glory days in the Byzantine era: during the 15th century, it was brought to its knees by a series of plagues, while the progressive growth of Venice helped to accelerate the decline of the settlement.

Since then, Torcello was almost uninhabited: today, the island is sparsely populated, with less than twenty inhabitants, but boasts a cultural heritage that makes it one of the most visited sights in the Venice Lagoon.

The main attractions on the island are located around the main square of Torcello: the ancient Cathedral, the Church of Santa Fosca, the Throne of Attila and the Devil's Bridge. This very tiny island surely knows how to surprise its visitors.
