If you're planning a trip to Tuscany it would be a mistake to skip a tour of Monteriggioni: known as one of the best examples of medieval villages in Tuscany, this unique town has managed to preserve its urban structure and its ancient atmosphere over the centuries.
Nestled on the top of a hill, the fortified town of Monterrigioni dominates the surrounding landscape, with its 10 meters high walls alternated by 14 towers.
Monteriggioni was built by the Sienese in the 13th century as a defensive structure, thanks to its strategic location. Today, the town still retains all its charm. In the historic centre lie a vast square and a maze of narrow alleys, filled with old churches and handicraft shops.
